Background colors is only available on choice columns and allows you to format the background of each choice that has been defined for the column. To use this type of formatting, do the following:

From the choice of column formatting options, select Background colors from the list of available options and click the Edit styles link:

Select a background color for each choice:

To further customize the item, click Edit styles. From the Change style pane, you can define the fill color, format the font, define a custom icon and its alignment, and define the borders of the column value:
